2-day itinerary
The exact plan for a flying weekend — fort, churches, caves and two beaches.
Three realistic ways in, compared with times, costs and honesty about road conditions. Last updated September 2026.
Fly if you're coming from Mumbai or Ahmedabad and value time (the flight is roughly an hour, and DIU airport is 15 minutes from Nagoa Beach). Drive if you want the freedom of a car for the Diu + Somnath combination. Train to Veraval + taxi is the classic budget route from farther afield.
Direct flights to Diu are operated by IndiGo, Star Air and Alliance Air — schedules change seasonally, so always check the airline or a booking engine before relying on a specific time.
| Option | From | Time | Approx. cost (one way) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ✈️ Flight | Mumbai (BOM) / Ahmedabad (AMD) | 1 hr (plus airport time) | ₹3,500–₹8,000 | Saving days; weekend trips |
| 🚗 Car | Ahmedabad | ~8 hrs (360 km) | ₹3,000 fuel + tolls | Road-trippers; adding Somnath/Gir |
| 🚗 Car | Mumbai | ~13–15 hrs (650 km) | ₹5,500 fuel + tolls | Slow overland journeys |
| 🚆 Train + taxi | Anywhere → Veraval | ~2 hrs Veraval→Diu taxi | ₹1,200–₹2,000 taxi | Budget & long-distance travel |
| 🚌 Bus | Ahmedabad / Rajkot / Veraval | 8–10 hrs | ₹400–₹900 | Cheapest option |
Diu Airport is the easiest gateway. It sits on the north side of the island — about 10–15 minutes by taxi from Diu town and Nagoa.
Winter (Dec–Jan) flights fill fast. Book 3–4 weeks ahead for the weekend departures that families and couples use.
Veraval — 90 km and about 2 hours from Diu — is the nearest useful railhead. Trains from Ahmedabad, Rajkot and beyond stop here, and it's also where the road to Somnath branches off.
Last-mile taxis from Veraval are limited late evening. Arrive in daylight if you can, or pre-book through your hotel.
| Route | Distance | Realistic time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad → Diu | ~360 km | 8 hrs | Via Rajkot or Una; some use the Ghogha–Dahej ferry shortcut |
| Rajkot → Diu | ~195 km | 4–4.5 hrs | Good highway most of the way |
| Veraval → Diu | ~90 km | 2 hrs | The classic train+taxi stretch |
| Somnath → Diu | ~90 km | 2 hrs | Same coastal corridor as Veraval |
| Mumbai → Diu | ~650 km | 13–15 hrs | Split it with an overnight stop in Surat |
A day trip from Ahmedabad means 16 hours of driving for a few hours on the island. Flying in and staying two nights costs barely more in time — and you actually see Diu. See why two nights is the right length →
Diu is flat and small — a scooter is the best way around, with rentals near the town market and Nagoa from about ₹300–₹500 a day. Auto-rickshaws and taxis work for point-to-point hops, and cycling is pleasant in winter for the town-to-Nagoa stretch. See Practical tips for rental details and helmet advice.
No railway line reaches the island of Diu itself. The nearest main station is Veraval (VRL), ~90 km away, and Somnath has a newer station used by some trains. From either, take a taxi or bus to Diu.
IndiGo, Star Air and Alliance Air have operated services on the Mumbai–Diu and Ahmedabad–Diu sectors. Schedules shift seasonally — verify live availability before booking.
There is no regular passenger ferry to Diu for tourists. The Ghogha–Dahej ferry on the mainland is sometimes used as a road shortcut between Ahmedabad and the Saurashtra coast, but you still drive the last stretch.

Month by month — when the water is right and when it isn't.

Turn the journey into a loop: heritage island, temple town, Asiatic lions.
